Thirty-five years is a significant milestone—long enough for an event to build a rich history, establish enduring traditions and attract a loyal following. Yet reaching such a milestone also comes with a responsibility to evolve and reinvent itself from time to time. The 35th Budapest Wine Festival once again demonstrated what an exceptional meeting place it is for wine professionals, the wider public and Hungarian wine culture as a whole. Over the course of four days, more than 29,000 visitors came to taste and discover wines, meet friends or simply enjoy the festival’s unmistakable atmosphere.
Although the September weather brought its share of surprises once again, it did nothing to dampen the festival’s energy or the enthusiasm of its visitors. Large crowds were already arriving by Wednesday afternoon, and by Saturday the courtyards and terraces of Buda Castle were completely full. Tastings were in full swing at the stands, corks popped continuously, and an exciting selection of culinary creations complemented the wines. By evening, music and a carefree festival atmosphere filled the areas around the stages.
One of this year’s most popular new additions was the Explorer Day Pass, which brought fresh energy to weekday afternoons. Many visitors took advantage of the discounted admission, allowing wine lovers to explore the latest offerings at a leisurely pace well before the evening rush.
The festival’s industry-focused and educational programmes were also refreshed, returning this year in a more playful format. The VinAgora Wine Casino by Taste & Play tent was constantly buzzing with visitors eager to join in the fun. Wine Roulette, the Sparkling Wine Wheel, Wine Blackjack and the Wine Derby showed that the world of wine can be explored through memorable experiences, excitement and a generous dose of playfulness. The Nébih Wine Quiz Bar proved equally popular, inviting visitors to put their wine knowledge to the test through aromas, quizzes and a variety of entertaining challenges.
The guests of honour at this anniversary edition were the iconic wine-producing nations of the Americas. Wines from the United States, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Brazil attracted a steady stream of interest throughout the festival. The themed tasting flights transported visitors across the Atlantic, taking them on a journey through the diverse and fascinating wine regions of the Americas.
Meanwhile, there was almost always something happening around the MVM Stage. The Kvaterka discussions were accompanied by complimentary tastings, while live music filled the space at other times. In the evenings, concerts and DJs took over the stage. Some visitors enjoyed the music with a glass of wine in hand, while others were swept up in the atmosphere and took to the dance floor.
A new experience also awaited visitors on the Culinaris Wine & Music VIP terrace. Its relaxed daytime lounge atmosphere gave way in the evenings to DJs and a different musical vibe on each of the four days, while premium wines, sparkling wines, spirits and specialities from Culinaris completed the VIP experience. Yet the festival’s culinary offering extended far beyond the VIP terrace. From Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes to steaks, oysters and seafood, as well as festival favourites and desserts, it was almost impossible to walk through the venue without finding something tempting to try.
Above all, of course, there was the very thing that has drawn tens of thousands of wine lovers to Buda Castle year after year for the past 35 years: the wine. An impressive array of wines and sparkling wines awaited visitors, from established names and exciting new discoveries to easy-drinking selections and prestigious flagship bottlings. Countless bottles were opened over the four days, prompting innumerable toasts and conversations at the stands. Alongside its loyal Hungarian audience, this prestigious, high-quality wine festival—unique in Europe—continues to attract a growing number of international visitors, many of whom return year after year.
The Budapest Wine Festival is about far more than what is poured into the glass. It is also a celebration of community, tradition, shared experiences and the knowledge that wine lovers have cultivated together over the past 35 years.
