SPAR Hungary
SPAR Magyarország Kereskedelmi Kft. was founded in 1990. The SPAR Group opened its first store in Hungary in Tata in 1991. The store conversions and retail network acquisitions that characterised the company’s early years were followed by a series of new store openings, including greenfield developments. A major milestone in the expansion of the network was the conversion of fourteen Billa stores, acquired at the end of 2002, into SPAR stores, followed by the acquisition of twenty-two Kaiser’s supermarkets in 2003. SPAR completed the largest acquisition in its history in 2008, when it took over the entire Plus store network operating in Hungary. The company operates its own meat-processing plants in Bicske and Perbál, as well as a convenience food production facility in Üllő that makes fresh sandwiches and salads. In 2012, the SPAR Group began developing its franchise system in Hungary. Alongside the expansion of its network, the company continuously renovates and modernises its older stores. With nearly 14,000 employees, SPAR Magyarország Kereskedelmi Kft. is Hungary’s fifth-largest employer. As of 31 December 2025, SPAR Hungary operated a total of 331 company-owned stores: 36 INTERSPAR hypermarkets, 268 SPAR supermarkets and 27 City SPAR supermarkets. A further 316 stores operated under its franchise programme: 65 SPAR partner stores, 94 SPAR market stores, 87 OMV-SPAR express stores and 70 ORLEN-DESPAR stores. Altogether, this brought the total number of SPAR-branded stores to 647.
